AVI SHOOTOUT - 2025
In no particular order
6
Jeff Dalley - Breeding: Past Presidentialballpark/Foreign aid
Weight for age prospect. Would very much like to read his name in Monday's Press as the winner. Was slow when the gates flew open in his last start and never recovered. Trained off-shore, and may struggle in a big field. Had colic issues recently so will need to be vetted prior to weigh in. Informed bookie spies say: has new light racing plates. Crossing the road an issue. Requires further practice. Long shot. Percy the place punter says: "save the cash"
Suggested Win Dividend-$16.50
Trainer: Scott Yellowball.
Nicky West - Breeding: Mortgage man / Ladylender. Trentham
Hard raced filly. Qualified near the top. Likes the course. Sound filly from the mixed Berry stable 2 hole outs for 1 are a distant memory. Originally raced in the Wellington area where the fields are easier. Suffered a huge defeat when fell with a furlong to go, when racing against 2 grand stallions earlier in the racing season. Still suffers from that cucumber issue some years ago, while getting a good whipping in that race. Reasonable Place Bet. Drawn well, big hope. Will go the distance. Will count the cash if she wins. One of the Ladies favourite. Go you good thing.
Suggested Win Dividend-$12.00 Trainer: Brentmeyer. Heretaunga.
Sam Gavin - Breeding: Lumberman/Hangover
Form North Canterbury horse. Bred from the very sound mare "Teamsmokes". Would prefer DB Stakes distance. Qualified mid-field so that's where he is likely to finish. Great finish last year. That cash is well spent. Will be swabbed prior to Tee Off - Usually stabled at the AVI so maybe late, but still a solid bet. Has not learnt from recent runs against champion company. Inclined to hang late in races. Requires further improvement as now in 'Campbell Stable'. Previously based at Matamata. Your money - not mine. Vets are concerned as carrying little weight. May require further barrier trials.
Suggested Win Dividend-$7.00 Trainer: C.D Speights & Others
Gordon Simpson - Breeding: Toothfairy/Republican Party. USA.
Top Qualifier. Bred from that outstanding mare "Toothfairy." And owned by D.J.T. Qualified mid-field. No other entrant played so many qualifying rounds. Has to overcome fetlock problem, probably will again be heavily strapped on both legs. - Ownership of this stallion is under dispute. Still under Trumps spell. Nerves could be a major factor here, but a great winning performance in the Top Dog St Ledger will help his confidence. Good prospect, but will he stay? Wouldn't put my Super Fund on his back.
Suggested Win Dividend-$12.00
Trainer: Sneak in a Red
Scott Callaway- Breeding Brosnan/Ping
Qualified near the top. A bay gelding, trained on nearby track, looks the part and would like to win. Good chance if hook & slice controlled. Not his first big event. Has been eliminated early in the past, but present form indicates otherwise. Inclined to wobble when under pressure. Loves the rough. Over practice not an issue. Seen out a lot lately, probably having workouts in China. Reasonable prospect this year. Maybe set for a spring campaign at Mooney Valley (or maybe Greymouth 'Welcome' Stakes). Quinella and Trifector chance. Look out for that yellow and black ball. Trialling for a Pony Club career if this horse fails!!!
Suggested Win Dividend-$14.50
Trainer: M Jimenez Spain
Joe Gantley - Breeding: Greyway/I'm-a-towny
Trained at Templeton. Previous winner. Loathes the wet so hoping for the dust rising. Penalty weight of 62 will not help now. Confident with 'Shootout Game' - Generous and will shout if he wins again, keep handy. Top sprinter and experts say he could do it again. A lot of top racing experience.
Proud Owner - sound prospect - should be full of running if crosses the road. Maybe set for a Melbourne cup campaign in the spring.
Suggested Win Dividend-$4.00.
Trainer: Wood Ward Prebbleton.
Brent Berry - Breeding: Mikesmeboy/Senior Pro
Seasoned Campaigner!!!! Recent form average following off shore racing, but fitness not an issue here. Tightly assessed gelding. Stabled with that other entrant from Wellington who is rated higher. Some late intense beach work in Europe and Asia may have helped but the bookies will go broke if he wins. Not a long shot but worth a dollar. May get some Burnham money again- needs a solid pre-start run, bookies hear he runs better on lower South Island tracks. Due for a tilt at the fences if performance not up to scratch. Racing scribes say "worth a punt". Suggested Win Dividend - $9.00
Trainer: Mixed Frozen. Berry/Greenpark
Tony Hawker - Breeding: Homewithview/Unknownwarrior.
Weight for age prospect (bred to stay). First start. Not much known about this runner as has been racing in Russia. Certainly coming in under the radar. But stable talk is confident. Afraid this will not help his short game. Great finish in last years Golden Slipper. Getting past the 6th hole will be tricky, could pay a divvy if first time nerves are controlled. Any Chipping shootout could bugger him. Stipes still want him stabled on-course overnight. Believe me, he WILL try hard. Think about an each way bet here. New strapper in his team.
Suggested Win Dividend-$32.00
Trainer: Beardie Riccarton
Wayne Love - Breeding: Loveshack/Allnighterlong
Great heavyweight prospect, qualified near the rear. Finished a 'stiff' third in the Oaks to that grand filly 'Calendar Girl' from 'Latin Lover'. Vets will require him to trial with the boys due to bad barrier manner. Had a dream run in the 1870 Wellington Hurdles. Keeps the 'ball/s' low into the wind, now trained at Riccarton, his Canada run did not return the best results. Only average performances recently. Will need some solid whipping over the final stages if he gets the stitch. Truly a sound performer over the years.
Suggested Win Dividend-$28.00. Great money here!!!! Trainer: Mr JD-Shirley
Greg Samson - Breeding: Greyway/Lochielover
Australian contender and well handicapped. A glance at his pedigree indicates he is from that solid stallion "Housesitter" from Yabber. Trained at Flemington alongside Winx (believe Me). His owners flew him in last month. Has been racing on dry dusty country tracks across the Tasman so this will be different. Disappointing result in The Top Dog. Unlikely to like the heavy grass here. Will bet plenty-but tries hard and will need to!! Prospects to cross the road - doubtful!!! Bowls still an option!!! Suggested Win Dividend-$31.00 (PLUS GST)
Trainer: G.O. Qantas
Fiona Beale - Breeding: Americanmusle/Newchum
A first time runner. New to the shootout scene. Nerves are a major factor here. Threw a plate in The Epson Hcp which cost her any chance and never recovered. Has trialed with blinkers and Vets insist she runs accordingly. Has performed well in recent times, especially at club level-but this is a step up!!! Has suffered from saddle rash at times but the stable says she's quietly confident but the bowling club beckons. Not the bookies favourite - can't be? She's confident, worth a dollar!! Suggested Win Dividend-$29.00
Trainer: Tommy Moore Trentham
Barry Toomey - Breeding: Tango/Exceptional
A bay colt. Not a lot of experience at this level. Trained at Hanmer, bloody windy track that one!!! Qualified mid-field. Had a very bad day in The Ashburton Flying stakes when under the whip with 500 to go and his jockey lost his irons, and then weighed in light. Real Bummer That - cost the punters plenty.
Lightweight prospect and again using the club's strapper 'Jimmy Gordon'. Barrier manners again need improving and may need the run. Hope the fetlocks hold up, Coat looks polished and ready to race. Off shore money flowing in on this one. Not fancied by the bookies. YOUR RISK, YOUR MONEY!!!
Suggested Win Dividend-$33.00
Trainer: Jock Rash Matamata
Richard Campbell - Breeding: I'm A Leftie/Lovedahops Owner: El Shari Dubai
Disappointed at last start with a poor finish but able to go well. No current form too busy chasing the bait. Has again secured last year's champion Jockey Jason Skehillton, who is still suffering from a fall some seasons ago. Will stay all night if he wins and has no fetlock problems this year. Concrete this one in. Considering a career in professional golf!!!!???? Will be stabled with Jollimont for a week prior to the final. Bet with confidence. Owner says - 'Will be turned out if the finish is not in the top 10'. Good luck!! Finished 15th in 2010, 3rd in 2011. Suggested Win Dividend - $3.00 Trainer: H.E. Faggs (never)
Murray Pool - Breeding. Outdoorboy/Bev's delight
Qualified mid-field. Current Club Champion. Sound performer when he plays. The Freedmans purchased him in the Aussie sales for a bargain in 1930 so nothing to loose. A big hitter if the pace is strong. Solid Riccarton stallion, will not struggle in this field - so demands a lot of respect. Will be racing without blinkers for the first time. The bookies will go broke if he wins. Was slow away in his last start, came off the fence and battled well to win. Could be gelded if he doesn't run in the first 10.
Suggested Win Dividend-$1.50
Trainer: Chippie Chopper Riccarton
Gray Prebble- Breeding: Greyway/Needacart
Solid grey stallion - qualified about 7th. Trained in the City on the beach at Waimairi. Well beaten in Championship run a year or so ago. Bred from that outstanding Group 1 mare "Lovethegame" from Talkative. Has now overcome that bad hoof problem, will rock the joint if he wins - He is under a good Vet with great juice. Nerves won't be a major factor here. Raced at Kurow in a sprint last start, but after hanging badly got boxed in and never a chance. Good prospect, but will he stay? Wouldn't put my Super Fund on his back.
Suggested Win Dividend-$18.00, perhaps a good thing!! He could rock the tote. Trainer: Tommy Town Boy. Prebbleton
Adam Jacks - Breeding Foreignaid/ Lunn-D-Sand
Trained on the course by the bowling club where he wants to be. 100th time starter. Qualified near the top. Performed well in The Open Handicap, after an average only trial, struggled home. May be best walking the dogs. Should pay a small dividend. Finished 19th in 2011. Highly supported runner and carries little weight. Could shout if he wins, keep handy to the bar. Top sprinter, ran "Shu In" to a close 9th in The Welcome Stakes, but experts ask: can he stay in this big event? His connections gladly paid the late entrance fee.
Should be full of running if crosses the road. Maybe set for an Invercargill campaign in the Autumn or extra lessons. Trifector, quinella prospect.
Suggested Win Dividend-$22.00. Percy Place Punter says cement this one in a BLACK BOOKER
Trainer. Gone No Trump. Hanmer
Don Giles - Breeding: Beancounter/Allcommittees.
Determined runner who plays plenty, bred to stay. Keeps whacking away and tries hard as he's done in previous years. Looking for a good performance. This horse is certainly one to watch - still attends trials, workouts and practice runs - Don't leave out of Win and Place, and Quinellas. One of the most practiced horses in the field. Owners last year were delighted with this horses 2017 run. Charge the batteries and press go. Expect another stable plunge. Early money suggests top place here. Suggested Win Dividend-$19.50.
Trainer: Keen Kart. Gore
Bruce Mitchell - Breeding: Team Smokes/Shorts-Brigade
Qualified at the back. Riccarton horse. The whale says he can win. Fitness will be an issue. Would prefer to run against maidens. Take on trust but could be a bolter in this field. Has had steady barrier trials. Vets will take a close look as may have digested a rollie. Inclined to lather up at the start and when under pressure. Trains with those other puffers. Watch this space down the track. Bound to carry John Jonsey money.
Suggested Win Dividend-$28.00 Trainer: B & H. Fags
Paul Jones - Breeding: Lofty Heights/Came-too-soon.
Fifth time starter. Inside the top 19 at the time of publication, but qualified mid- field. Solid finish last start, after getting near a win but fell a furlong out. Backs himself highly. Not sure what game he will bring on the day. Guaranteed he will punt himself to the hilt. Likes a snifter although he prefers the shorter distance. Lightweight Jockey required (MacDonald will be flown in, it's on the books) - Certainly NOT over trained. Perhaps better at twilight. Let's hope the stable feeds him up. Could be spelled after this run. Another runner who may go north to 'The Browne' stable for a hurdling or jumping career if he can't cross the road. Suggested Win Dividend-$21.50
Trainer: Jim Jones USA
